Roadmap/09 - Dental hygiene

From WikiPeatia

"Teeth that are sensitive to heat or cold suggest a deficiency of calcium, magnesium, or vitamin D." - Ray Peat

“I think teeth are the first reminder of mortality. I think that's where it begins to hit ya. Cus they don't come back and that's it.” - Terry A. Davis

Dental health depends not only on cleaning teeth but also on supporting mineral balance, saliva quality, and bacterial ecology, all of which are strongly influenced by thyroid and metabolic health.

Teeth before and after consistent use of nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste.[2]

Fluoride vs. zinc hydroxyapatite[edit]

  • Fluoride hardens enamel but harms thyroid health.
  • Zinc hydroxyapatite toothpaste can remineralize enamel naturally, repair sensitivity, and even reverse early cavities.

Saliva & thyroid link[edit]

  • Healthy saliva depends on good thyroid function.
  • Strong thyroid → better saliva → fewer harmful bacteria → less inflammation and endotoxin.

Endotoxin[edit]

  • Reverse peristalsis
  • Dying bacteria release endotoxins that trigger inflammation, linked to systemic diseases (heart disease, cancer).
  • Good oral hygiene reduces endotoxin exposure.
  • Natural remineralisation & antibacterial Methods

Coconut oil pulling[edit]

  • Swish 15+ minutes daily; lauric acid released during breakdown destroys bacterial membranes.
  • Don't use commercial mouthwash, 55% higher pre-diabetes/diabetes risk[3], Disrupts oral bacteria → NO drop → higher BP[4], lower oxygen delivery, deregulated insulin, reduced muscle recovery/VO2 max[5],

Tools[edit]

  • Miswak toothbrush
    • Brush with EXTRA soft bristles to avoid enamel erosion
  • Waterpik
  • Floss or other interdental cleaning device
  • Tongue scraper (focus on the source of candida, not just the symptom)
  • Calcium carbonate & baking soda
    • Neutralize acidity and provide calcium for remineralisation.
    • Rinse with baking soda water after coffee or acidic foods.
  • Toothpaste and brushing

Practices[edit]

Brushing teeth[edit]

  • Brush after waking up before breakfast so you don't swallow a mouthful of bacteria
  • Don't brush immediately after eating because of raised acid, you could damage the enamel, rinse instead.

Sugar & acid[edit]

  • Minimize contact, maximize remineralization
  • Drink juice through a straw
  • Rinse with water after

Dietary ratios[edit]

Vitamins & minerals[edit]

Mastic gum[edit]

  • Natural antibacterial gum that fights H. pylori and strengthens jaw/tongue muscles, reducing mouth breathing. Can treat ulcers.[6]

Additional practices[edit]

  • Nose breathing at night: Use gentle mouth tape to prevent dry mouth.
  • Avoid fluoride, antibiotics, mercury fillings, and excessive x-rays.
  • For dental pain: Clove-infused alcohol mouthwash can soothe pain (due to eugenol).
  • Temporary fillings: Zinc oxide + eugenol mix preferred before deeper damage occurs.
  • Regular scaling: Helps remove plaque if done by a careful professional.

Summary[edit]

  • Use zinc hydroxyapatite toothpaste with calcium carbonate & baking soda.
  • Do daily coconut oil pulling (15+ minutes).
  • Rinse with baking soda water after acidic drinks.
  • Keep calcium:phosphate = 2:1 (eat more dairy).
  • Supplement Vitamin K2 MK-4, D, magnesium, zinc.
  • Chew mastic gum instead of conventional gum.
  • Water floss regularly.
  • Address cavities early with temporary fillings.
  • Use clove mouthwash for tooth pain.
  • Scale teeth carefully, and advocate for your dental health.

Tooth decay[edit]

Link to tooth decay

Wisdom teeth[edit]

Not as unimportant as the dentists who are eager to extract would claim. The issue is narrow palette, not wisdom teeth being some pointless leftover from prehistoric times. Wisdom teeth contains stem cells that aid in repairing the heart, brain and bones,.[7][8]
